Maurer Farms shares the fruits of their labor
Nestled on Batdorf Road in Wooster Township, David, Carol and son Roger Maurer have been producing crisp vegetables and sweet fruits for more than 60 years.
The family farm opened their doors in 1950 by selling their fresh strawberries from a small plot of land in the north end of Wooster. Today, Maurer Farms has grown to specialize in strawberries, black raspberries, pumpkins, sweet corn, as well as several different kinds of vegetables.
Roger said the farm has been expanding rapidly over the last several decades.
It’s no secret that the business has been built on quality, because the family practices responsible farming. Unlike several farmers, they follow integrated pest management by inspecting their fields for pests, plant resistant varieties and crop practices before, during and after planting of crops that help to prevent the usage of pesticides. Additionally, the trio ensures that all employees follow a written food safety policy.
Buehler’s Fresh Foods has been a proud partner with Maurer Farms for several years.
“We have been with Buehler’s since the very beginning,” Roger said. “We give a status report of how our crop is progressing daily.”
Roger also said they really take extra care when handpicking produce to avoid bruising. At Buehler’s they have quality control that they have to meet as a local grower. For example, their tomatoes are graded on their vibrant color, texture, plumpness, and their skins must be free of cracks or blemishes.
“We pride ourselves with producing quality products and economically priced fruits and vegetables,” Roger said. “We plan to just keep doing what we are doing, and try to do it better each year.”
