Buehler’s Fresh Foods would like to thank our customers, employees, and vendors for all the extraordinary efforts that went into raising funds for the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank during our Harvest for Hunger campaign.

“We are truly amazed that even during these anxious times our customers have found the time to donate to Harvest for Hunger. We are very proud that each one of our stores, on average, raised more than $10,000 per store. Thanks to the Akron/Canton Food Bank and their great people for all that they do to fight food insecurity in Ohio.” said Dan Shanahan, President & CEO of Buehler’s Fresh Foods.

Buehler’s Fresh Foods raised nearly $131,000, which translates into 524,000 meals, through our register campaign, fun employee contests, and food bins, which happened at a critical time for not only the Foodbank, but for every American citizen. Even during the Covid-19 pandemic, our people prevailed, and  it’s a great comfort to know that even during these most difficult times, we can still rely on our customers and employees to think of those in need.

We had a stellar team at the helm coordinating, keeping track, and above all, staying organized and in touch with everyone involved. Kudos to the outstanding efforts of our Store Champions, Service & Facilities Managers, Kathy Bailey, Laura Pope, our Marketing team, and our Community Relations team.

“The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank is extremely grateful for Buehler’s commitment to not only continue to serve our community during this difficult time, but to remain diligent in their Harvest for Hunger Campaign collection efforts,” said Dan Flowers, president and CEO of the Foodbank. “It’s because of steadfast partnerships like these that enable us to serve our neighbors facing hunger. Their leadership is much appreciated and will be felt by families across this region.”

When asked about how this campaign was different from previous years, Bernie Rusnak, our New Philadelphia Store Manager (whose store raised $7,723.29 for H4H) stated, “Different just because of the epidemic and the stores were quite overwhelmed the first few weeks in mid March. As things settled, we were able to work more efficiently.”

Cherye Curlutu, Service and Facilities manager at our Dover store, stated that their store brought attention to the fact that school children were now at home full time, and parents needed to have more food available which helped promote the Foodbank.

A few facts about the Foodbank:

  • They distribute food through a network of 500 agencies from food pantries, hot meal sites, shelters, and hunger relief programs.
  • 263,200 different individuals receive food distributed by the Foodbank each year
  • 1.21 lbs. =1 meal and $1 = 4 meals
  • Food insecurity affects  1 in 7 individuals and 1 in 4 children
  • Food insecure individuals do not always know where they will find their next meal.

Buehler’s Fresh Foods has proudly supported the Akron-Canton Foodbank as a Harvest for Hunger participant for the past twelve years. We want to do our part to end hunger in each of the communities we serve.

Our partnership with the Akron-Canton Foodbank aligns with our corporate values and goals, hence our continued relationship. We are an organization committed to putting people first and this campaign is all about taking care of people in need in our communities.

Personal Days policy change for 2020

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Buehler’s is allowing employee’s personal carryover days from 2019 to be used anytime in 2020. Our policy was amended January 2020 to include a deadline to use the personal carryover days by March 31.  We are making an exception this year because we understand that many of our employees were planning on using their personal carryover days before March 31, but were unable to because of the expanded work schedule during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Best Time to Shop” is a new way for customers to determine the busiest and slowest times at their favorite Buehler’s Fresh Foods.

By going to Buehlers.com, clicking  Best Time to Shop” and looking at the easy to read color charts for your Buehler’s store –  customers will be able to save time and also do their part to reduce overcrowding – by spreading the shopping out through the whole week.

Shoppers are invited to use these charts to choose a less busy time to visit our stores, which should help to limit the amount of people in the store at any given time.  Shoppers will more easily be able to practice social distancing when they shop at less busy times. Every week Buehler’s will be looking at sales for every store for every hour and projecting the next week’s customer counts into three hour segments. We’ll share this information on this website to help customers with their planning. The store charts below show daily time segments with color coding: red for the busiest times, yellow for average, and green for slowest shopping times.

Dan Shanahan, CEO and President of Buehler’s said “The State of Ohio has requested that we help space the business out by limiting the maximum number of customers allowed, posting it on our front door then making sure if we hit the maximum a queue is spaced six feet apart outside. We applaud that request and think that in addition Buehler’s “Best Time to Shop” will help to spread the business out even further without making people wait in line outside. Limiting business at peak times is also naturally regulated by the number of carts, hand baskets and parking spots that we have in our stores.”

“As our frontline hero’s continue to keep our stores running, the safety of our employees and customers continues to be our focus. Customers are giving us positive feedback and appreciation for all that we are doing for their safety. We think they will really like checking in with “Best Time to Shop” each week.”

Buehler’s Fresh Foods will be closed on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2020, to allow employees a day to rest and enjoy time with their families. The decision comes days after Buehler’s announced a $250,000 employee appreciation pay.

“Over the last three weeks the character of our employees has shown through and made a lasting impression on all the customers who rely on us, new customers, suppliers and other stakeholders who are connected to us. This has manifested itself with countless individual examples too numerous to name. Our people are truly inspirational and we are thrilled that we are able to pay this bonus.” said Dan Shanahan, President and CEO of Buehler’s Fresh Foods.

To our Valued Customers,

At Buehler’s, we are committed to keeping our customers and employees safe.  With that in mind, we have tasked a team of employees to meet regularly and closely monitor the current situation with Coronavirus or COVID-19.  The team is monitoring all CDC and WHO communication and working with local, state and federal agencies as well as our suppliers, industry share groups, the Ohio Grocer’s Association and the National Grocer’s Association to gain a clear understanding of virus control procedures. Any and all good ideas and best practices are considered and implemented quickly by our team.

Our company has a long history of protecting customers by practicing safe sanitation procedures. Many of our employees working in key areas have received certified training through the ServSafe Food and Beverage safety training program. Employees also practice proper use of gloves and proper handwashing techniques. It is our priority to make sure our employees are in compliance with these guidelines. We have also implemented additional safety measures including discontinuing the use of self-serve demos and increased sanitation of surfaces throughout the store. One such example is our wiping down of shopping cart handles frequently throughout the day.

Buehler’s is committed to the safety and well-being of our employees. We are encouraging sick employees to stay home. We are also providing them with up to date information about the virus and resources to better understand personal time off benefits, short term disability rules and related HR policies. Through our online Dayforce System, we are able to communicate with video daily to all our employees.

We are working diligently with our suppliers to stay in-stock on the products that are most important to you. We will continue to work around the clock to provide customers with key items including pantry stock-up essentials and cleaning supplies.

It is a privilege to serve you and something that we never take for granted.
