Buehler’s Fresh Foods Wins Grocer Award

The Ohio Grocers Association (OGA) recently announced that Buehler’s Fresh Foods has been selected as the winner of this year’s Pinnacle Award. The OGA award is based on overall excellence in retail operations, and is  the highest award given by the Ohio Grocers Association. The Pinnacle Award is given annually to both a small and large operation, recognizing exceptional creativity, merchandising, innovation, human resources, community relations and overall successful operations.

Expressing his gratitude in Buehler’s being selected for this honor, Dan Shanahan, President & CEO of Buehlers, stated,  “On behalf of all our employees we are very thankful to receive this year’s Ohio Grocers Association Pinnacle Award for Large Operators. We are great admirers of Kristen Mullins, her team and the job they do for Ohio grocers which makes this award even more meaningful.”

Kristin Mullins, President/CEO of the OGA says of the Wooster-based grocery, ““Every year, OGA’s Pinnacle Award Selection Committee chooses two companies (one small operator and one large operator) to recognize as an outstanding retail organization.  Recipients are outstanding in every way – from operations to community involvement to everything in between; and no one exemplifies this more than the Buehler organization.  The Ohio Grocers Association is so pleased and honored to have this organization not only as a part of Ohio’s grocery industry but as a member of our organization as they are an outstanding example of excellence and are so deserving of this recognition.”

The award will be officially presented to Buehler’s at the Ohio Grocers Association Annual Ohio Brown Bag Celebration this spring.

And life is why.

About the American Heart Association:

In Stark and Wayne counties alone, heart disease and stroke claim 2,500 lives every year. But we are fighting back. Wooster, OH – As part of Buehler’s Fresh Foods commitment to giving back to its local communities, the grocery retail chain announced St. James Episcopal Church is the winner of $500 through the Our Family® Direct Your Labels™ contest. The church has chosen to forward the check to The Viola Startzman Clinic. Father Evan Fischer, rector of St. James Episcopal stated, “We are thankful to Our Family Direct your Labels program for their generous gift of $500 which has enabled St James to re-give the check to the Viola Startzman’s Dental Clinic and live further in our mission to reach out to those in need in our community.”

Viola Startzman’s Executive Director, Jaime Parsons, commented, “The Viola Startzman Dental Clinic is honored to receive this donation from St. James Episcopal Church, Buehler’s Fresh Foods, and Our Family. Each year, our clinic serves over 6,000 patients in need of dental care. Most have no dental insurance or cannot find a dentist who accepts Medicaid. With the generous support of our community, we are able to provide care valued at over $2 million dollars to these patients. This care keeps patients out of the emergency room, prevents them from missing school or work, and allows them to live healthy, happy lives. We are grateful for partners such as you for helping us meet these needs in our community.”

Direct Your Labels™ is a program offered through the Our Family brand, helping local schools and nonprofits earn money by buying Our Family products and saving the UPC barcodes from the cans, boxes, and bottles.

Held throughout August, the Direct Your Labels contest encouraged schools, faith-based and other community organizations to register to collect Our Family labels. Each organization that enrolled was entered to win one of 10 $500 prizes. All organizations previously participating in the program were also entered in the contest.

St. James Episcopal Church was selected as one of the $500 winners. Buehler’s Fresh Foods Towne Market Store Manager, Geri Shei, presented the prize to St. James Episcopal on Oct. 29, 2019. The presentation was held at Buehler’s Fresh Foods, located at 336 N. Market St., Wooster, OH.

Produce Perks Program Expands to Three New Buehler’s Locations

Fresh fruits and vegetables now more accessible for SNAP shoppers in Coshocton and Tuscarawas counties

September 1, 2019—For families who rely on SNAP (Food Stamps), fresh produce is often off the table – literally. But in Coshocton and Tuscarawas Counties, that’s about to change. A new program is bringing “produce-purchasing power” to the families who need it most.

Now families shopping with SNAP at the Coshocton, Dover, and New Philadelphia locations of Buehler’s Fresh Foods will receive up to $10 extra – per visit – to spend on fruits and vegetables. It’s all because of the Produce Perks Program.

We all know we should eat fruits and vegetables daily, but families struggling with poverty often simply cannot afford them. As a result, the same people forced to skip meals are also likely to suffer from obesity and diabetes—because the foods they can afford lead to high rates of diet-related disease. But when people can afford fresh produce, they buy it. That’s where this program comes in.

Each time SNAP customers spend at least $5 on fresh produce at Buehler’s, they will receive a $5 coupon for more fresh fruits and vegetables. Customers who spend more than $10 will receive a $10 coupon. There’s no enrollment or paperwork to fill out; shoppers receive the benefit automatically. Three additional Buehler’s Fresh Foods locations (stores in Coshocton, Dover, and New Philadelphia) will distribute produce vouchers starting on September 1, 2019. These stores join the two stores in Wooster and one in Orville that already offer the program.

Founded in 1929, Buehler’s Fresh Foods is an employee-owned supermarket chain with 13 locations in northeast Ohio.

Produce Perks is Ohio’s nutrition incentive program, empowering SNAP recipients to purchase fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables from Ohio farmers’ markets and grocery-retailers across the state. The program provides a $1-for-$1 match for shoppers using SNAP/EBT to buy healthy produce. Produce Perks is operational at over 100 locations statewide and generated over $800,000 in sales in 2018. Produce Perks increases affordable access to healthy foods, supports Ohio farmers, and strengthens local economies.

“Produce Perks Midwest is thrilled to have Buehler’s Fresh Foods expand their participation in the Produce Perks program. We recognize their leadership amongst Ohio grocery-retailers and appreciate their commitment to providing affordable access to healthy foods. We’re excited to be working with a retail partner that shares our values toward building equitable communities and resilient food systems.” -Tevis Foreman, Executive Director, Produce Perks Midwest.
