Buehler’s Fresh Foods Announces the Addition of Premium, Healthy and Unique items to the Butcher Shop inside of the Wooster Milltown location

Wooster, Ohio – July 2, 2019

Buehler’s Fresh Foods announces the addition of premium, healthy and unique items to the Butcher Shop, a specialty area in the meat department inside of the Buehler’s Wooster Milltown location. All items are located in the full-service case of the meat department. Department hours for the full-service case are 9 am to 8 pm.

As consumers move towards healthier options, the Butcher Shop offers some plant based options such as Vegetable Kabobs, Stuffed Black Bean Portabella Mushroom burgers and Black Bean burgers, which are made at the Milltown store.

For healthier beef options, we have brought back the Niman Ranch beef products. This includes ground beef, filet steaks, Tomahawk pork chops and steaks, along with Applewood Smoked bacon. The Tomahawk cut is an eye-catching cut that exposes the long bone in the meat. All Niman Ranch items have never been administered antibiotics or hormones – ever. Niman Ranch is a licensed distributor of Certified Angus Beef (CAB).

Some chicken options that are healthier include Angel Family Farms boneless, skinless original chicken breasts. These chickens are fed a fortified Omega-3 diet.

Other chicken options include Miller Amish Country Poultry Organic Chicken Breast & Vegetable Kabobs and Gerber’s Chicken items. Miller Amish Country Poultry are raised without antibiotics and the vegetables are organic and non-GMO verified. The Gerber Chicken items include Cajun or Chipotle Chicken Burgers and Chicken Breast Kabobs with Vegetables. Gerber’s chicken products contain no antibiotics and no growth promotants.

For customers who are looking for the very best that the meat industry can offer, Buehler’s Milltown Butcher Shop will offer Dry Aged Boneless Beef Strip Steaks and Ribeye Steaks from Meats by Linz, a family-owned company. These are aged for 45 days and offer a nutty flavor.

We also offer American Wagyu Beef products from Snake River Farms, including burgers, ground beef, strip steaks, ribeye steaks and filet steaks. The American Wagyu Beef products have higher marbling than USDA Prime. The production process of their cattle and the extraordinary care given to these special breeds makes it the finest quality meats available.

“Our customers have requested different meat items and we are happy to source them. Buehler’s will continue to grow our specialty offerings, providing both items that have a healthier eating experience along with the best of the best meat items available in the industry”, says Dave Savidge, Buehler’s Fresh Foods Director of Meat/Seafood.

Ohioans Have New Way to Play Lottery As Mega Millions® Sets Jackpot Record

Ohio among the first states to launch text-to-play Lottery Card™, which gives consumers a new, digital lottery experience

CLEVELAND — October 18, 2018 — As shoppers across the country race to get tickets for the record-setting $868 million Mega Millions® jackpot, Ohians have access to a new way to play that provides an exciting, convenient and fun lottery experience. The new text-to-play Lottery Card, now available in Buehler’s Fresh Foods, allows Ohio consumers to enter draw games on their phones, get notified and paid electronically if they win. Ohio is among the first states to debut this digital lottery option. The Lottery Card is the result of a collaboration between Linq3 and Blackhawk Network (Blackhawk).

“The Lottery Card allows shoppers to skip the long lines to buy a ticket during high lottery jackpots. This is because the cards are available at grocers throughout the state and can be purchased at any checkout, not just the service desk,”  said Tom Spiegel, Linq3 Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “The astounding, record-setting $868 million Mega Millions jackpot is a great time for Ohioans to try this new way to play. The Lottery Card marries a fun, digital lottery experience with the convenience of a gift card.”

The Lottery Card provides a host of consumer benefits:

  • No more lost tickets – digital tickets are sent to the player’s phone via text and picture message
  • No need to check numbers – players are notified via text and picture message if they win
  • No uncollected prizes or need to return to the store to collect low-tier wins (under $600) – every time players win, they get paid electronically via PayPal
  • Buy at ANY checkout – Lottery Cards can be purchased at any checkout in
a participating retailer, not just the service desk
  • Lottery Cards are reusable – players keep their cards for jackpot wins and for easy replay the next time they return to the store.

Lottery Cards are currently available for both Powerball and Mega Millions, and cost $10 for five plays and $20 for 10 plays. Consumers are charged the cost of their chosen Lottery Card plus $0.89 for Mobile Play Benefits.

To play, consumers simply purchase the Lottery Card at their favorite Buehler’s, Giant Eagle or Kroger location. When ready to enter the next lottery drawing, the player texts in the Lottery Card’s unique code to a specified number, provides their name and confirms their location to complete a one-time card enrollment. The player then receives a picture message with the quick pick numbers, draw date and other transaction information. Winners are notified via text and picture message and most winnings are paid automatically via PayPal. After enrolling, players can use their Lottery Card to play again and again by presenting it at checkout. More details regarding this new way to play, including where to buy the Lottery Card, are available at playatthecheckout.com.

The Lottery Card is the result of a partnership between Linq3 and Blackhawk Network (Blackhawk). Linq3 is an innovation and technology company that designs, builds and markets state-of-the-art solutions that make it easier and more fun to play the lottery. Blackhawk is a global financial technology company and leader in connecting brands and people through branded value solutions, including gift cards.

The Lottery Card provides Ohio shoppers with a great new way to gift the excitement of Powerball and Mega Millions in the convenient package of a gift card. Based on independently-conducted research, 44 percent of consumers surveyed are interested in receiving a gift card to play the lottery, while 43 percent would be interested in giving a lottery gift card.

According to the National Retail Federation, for the eleventh year in a row, gift cards have been the most popular items on holiday wish lists in America. The addition of the Lottery Card to checkout lanes and gift card racks will provide consumers with a new gift card option for the five gift-giving holidays―and retailers with a new way to capitalize on lottery interest during peak jackpots.

Between 2007 and 2016, the Ohio Lottery contributed more than $8.04 billion to the state’s education system, including more than $1.06 billion in 2016 alone.

Buehler’s Fresh Foods encourages store guests to support their favorite nonprofits through Direct Your Labels™ program
Individuals, nonprofit organizations can collect, redeem Our Family® brand labels for money

Store guests who visit any Buehler’s location will have the opportunity to help their favorite school or nonprofit organization earn money through the Direct Your Labels™ program.

The Our Family® Direct Your Labels program gives store guests a way to give back to their favorite nonprofit organizations with each trip they make to the grocery store. For each bundle of 500 Our Family UPC barcodes collected, participating organizations can earn $25 – with no limit to the number of original labels any organization or individual can collect.

“Buehler’s has sold Our Family products for many years and our community has benefitted from the  Labels for Learning program, which has now been rebranded as Direct Your Labels,” said Peter O’Donnell, Buehler’s Chief Financial Officer.  “Collecting the labels is an easy way to quickly raise funds for your school or charity.  One of our goals is to raise awareness of this program and increase our support in the towns we live and operate in.”

By buying Our Family brand products – and saving the UPC barcodes from those cans, boxes and bottles – store guests can help schools, faith-based and other community organizations earn money for textbooks, art supplies and more.

Eligible groups must have a valid 501(c)(3) determination to participate in Direct Your Labels. Preschool and K-12 schools are eligible to collect Our Family labels, as well as school-sponsored groups and clubs. Faith-based and community service organizations can also participate in the labels program.

How Can You Use Direct Your Labels to Help Get Funds for Your Favorite Local School, Group or Charity?

Buehler’s Fresh Foods Wins Best Bagger 2018 in the State of Ohio

Best Bagger Competition 2018 - Ellissa Chambliss

Wooster, OH – August 16, 2018 – Ellissa Chambliss of Buehler’s Fresh Foods, defeated competitors from across Ohio to claim the title of the Ohio Grocers Association (OGA) Best Bagger Champion at the August 9, 2018 competition held at the Buehler’s Wooster Milltown location.

This is the second year in a row for Ellissa to claim the state title and the fourth year in a row for a Buehler’s bagger to represent the State of Ohio at the national bagging championship, hosted by the National Grocers Association. The national championship will be held in San Diego in February 2019.

Designed to promote supermarket employees and demonstrate a superior core customer service skill, the statewide competition has been held by OGA annually. Contestants are judged by speed of bagging, proper bag-building technique, weight distribution in the bag, as well as style, attitude and appearance, and are chosen through statewide competitions over the course of last year.

“The OGA puts on a fun event and we love to participate every year. We’ve been fortunate enough to have won this competition four years in a row in addition to the national championship in February 2017 in Las Vegas. It’s nice to be able to say that our baggers are the best in the state as well as the country” said Dan Shanahan, the President and COO of Buehler’s Fresh Foods.

New program Provides Fresh Fruits and Vegetables for low-income Wayne County shoppers

For families who rely on SNAP (Food Stamps), fresh produce is often off the table – literally. But in Wayne County, that’s about to change. A new program is bringing “produce-purchasing power” to the families who need it most.

Now families shopping with SNAP at the three Wayne county locations of Buehler’s Fresh Foods will receive up to $10 extra – per visit – to spend on fruits and vegetables. It’s all part of a partnership with the national non-profit Wholesome Wave, funded by the Ohio Department of Health and on track to reach tens of thousands of Ohioans this year.

We all know we should eat fruits and vegetables daily, but families struggling with poverty often simply cannot afford them. As a result, the same people forced to skip meals are also likely to suffer from obesity and diabetes—because the foods they can afford lead to high rates of diet-related disease. But when people can afford fresh produce, they buy it. That’s where this program comes in.

Each time SNAP customers spend at least $5 on fresh produce at Buehler’s, they will receive a $5 voucher for more fresh fruits and vegetables. There’s no enrollment or paperwork to fill out; shoppers receive the benefit automatically. Three Buehler’s Fresh Foods locations (two stores in Wooster and one in Orville) will distribute produce vouchers this summer.

National non-profit Wholesome Wave, which helped create the program, works across the country to equip families in poverty with produce-purchasing power and has been active in Ohio for years, supporting local partner Produce Perks Midwest and the Ohio Nutrition Incentive Network. Wholesome Wave has long helped Ohio SNAP shoppers buy more produce at farmers markets in Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati. Today SNAP shoppers can find Produce Perks at nearly 100 farmers markets across Ohio.

Now the concept has hit the supermarket check-out lane. The Ohio Grocers Association has played a key role, while Buehler’s Fresh Foods, an employee-owned company with 13 stores serving Northern Ohio will be making the idea a reality for their shoppers.

“Poverty should never be an obstacle to something as essential as fruits and vegetables,” said Sarah Pandoursky, Partnership Manager at Wholesome Wave. “Our programs have found, year after year and state after state, that when people can afford produce, they buy it. Diets change and health outcomes follow. Local businesses and area farmers benefit too. It’s good for everyone.”

“The Ohio Department of Health’s Creating Healthy Communities Program is committed to improving healthy food access in under-resourced communities,” said Ann Weidenbenner, MS, RDN, LD, Creating Healthy Communities Program Manager, Ohio Department of Health. “The expansion of the Produce Perks program to three Buehler’s retail locations in Wayne County improves access to fresh fruits and vegetables for residents and helps families on SNAP stretch their food dollars.”

“Produce Perks is thrilled to have Buehler’s Fresh Foods join our team. We recognize their leadership amongst Ohio grocery-retailers and appreciate their commitment to providing affordable access to healthy foods. We’re excited to be working with a retail partner that shares our values toward building equitable communities and resilient food systems. – Tevis Foreman, Executive Director, Produce Perks Midwest.

PROJECT PARTNERS & ROLES:

In 2017, the Ohio Department of Health made a pioneering investment of $800,000 in the statewide growth of Produce Perks. ODH continues to be a key partner and active participant in the efforts to expand the program to new communities across Ohio.

Wholesome Wave, a nationally-recognized leader in the field of nutrition incentive programs, manages the contract with the Ohio Department of Health. Wholesome Wave also provides technical expertise on the expansion of Produce Perks into grocery stores, complete with a marketing campaign designed to spread the word to SNAP consumers in surrounding communities.

Produce Perks Midwest, a Cincinnati-based nonprofit, serves as the backbone organization of the Ohio Nutrition Incentive Network, a multi-sector collaboration of stakeholders working to increase affordable access to healthy food for Ohio’s under-resourced communities, while strengthening local farms and economies. Find out more at www.ProducePerks.org.

The Ohio Grocers Association serves as a key partner in program development and growth, supporting store recruitment, Produce Perks promotion, and sustainability.

The Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods at Case Western Reserve University manages project evaluation.
