No, Great Lakes Brewery did not invent Christmas Ale….Though many wait in great anticipation for its arrival, the history (and actual requirements) for Christmas beers and ales goes back centuries to the times when our ancestors celebrated the pagan holiday of Winter Solstice. Indeed, over the centuries, the entire notion of “Christmas beer” became ingrained in the holidays as much as yule logs and mistletoe. Norwegian farmers were required to brew juleøl—yule ale—for their workers or face expulsion from their property. And throughout the 19th century, British workhouses—those Dickensian homes for the poor—broke the tedium with free Christmas ale for their residents.

Great Lakes Christmas Ale

The backstory of this iconic style is important because it establishes that Christmas/Winter beer isn’t really a style—it’s a tradition. It’s as fanciful as stockings hung by the chimney with care, or a child’s dreams of flying reindeer. It follows no criteria. Not that some rule-makers haven’t tried.  The Beer Judge Certification Program style guidelines (Category 21B) say its aroma should be “reminiscent of Christmas cookies”, its appearance should be amber to dark brown and it must taste “rich and malty.” Interestingly, the guidelines also demand: “spices are required.” However, some would point out that some brands including the hugely popular Troegs Mad Elf might taste spicy but that sensation is a product of its phenol-producing Belgian yeast strain, not cinnamon or nutmeg.

christmas-ale-blog-photo4

Indeed winter spice beers produced by America’s small and independent brewers embody the spirit of the holiday season and folks go crazy for them. Down in Asheville, NC, Highland Brewing Co. unveils the iconic Cold Mountain Winter Ale each November just before Thanksgiving and for the entire month it’s the talk of the town. Fans skip work on Cold Mountain Monday to raid area stores for the spiced amber brew, emptying shelves within hours or even minutes!

christmas-ale-blog-photo2

During their annual “First Pour” event in late October, the staff at Great Lakes Brewing Co. brewpub pours about 430 pints of Christmas Ale every 60 minutes for 12 consecutive hours.  That’s one pint every eight seconds.

Suffice it to say, holiday ales are highly anticipated every year and whether or not they stick to the guidelines, they are a tradition that continues to grow by leaps and bounds as more breweries enter into the fray each year, giving us beer drinkers more varieties to try and anticipate!

So whatever your personal traditions may be, raise a glass of one (or more) of these special beers and say “Cheers!” to a wonderful holiday season and a prosperous New Year!

Buehler’s Fresh Foods meat managers recently visited Rod and Laurie Ferguson’s Chippewa Valley Angus farm along with staff from Certified Angus Beef. Rod greeted the group as they gathered inside his barn to hear how this local veterinarian first got involved with the Angus breed.

angusfarmvisit12

As a young teen, a neighbor’s black Angus cow caught Rod’s eye. His family farm already was home to a small herd, but no black Angus cows. That was soon going to change! Rod, with his father’s help, obtained a loan to purchase his first Angus cow – and never looked back! He and his Angus cows won many awards throughout the years. Rod was thrilled to see the popularity of these black cows grow and grow. It has been on the upswing for decades!

angusfarmvisit9

The goal of Chippewa Valley Angus farm is to improve the already excellent breed. The farm breeds for small calves who grow strong quickly. He knows these small, healthy calves can thrive without a lot of human intervention.

The Fergusons also breed for increased marbling found in the beef (tiny white flecks found in beef that augment flavor and tenderness). Did you know the monounsaturated fatty acid, oleic acid, found in beef is the “good” kind of fat found in olive oil. Yes, eating beef is good for your health!

angusfarmvisit8

Throughout the visit, Buehler’s meat managers could observe the herd grazing and resting peacefully in grassy, spacious pastures. Rod emphasized that he concentrates on doing what is best for the animals. He referred often to animal expert, Temple Grandin, who has advised ranchers around the world on humane care of animals. She is highly respected in by Angus ranchers.

angusfarmvisit2

Rod takes great care to make sure his Angus cows are happy. He asked the group of guests to stop for a minute and just listen. There was silence. Rod explained that “Mooing” would have indicated distress in the herd. All the cows were calm.

angusfarmvisit7

Rod feeds his beef locally produced grain and minerals. The vet declared, “Animals eat a healthier diet by far than humans. Not as varied, but healthier.”  That’s thanks to the intensive science that goes into studying what’s best for producing the best beef.

angusfarmvisit4

Rod and Laurie have hosted groups from around the world – spreading their knowledge about the Angus breed. Supply and demand for the Angus beef is effected by many things around the globe. Drought makes farmers and ranchers sell off their herd, initially increasing supply, but in the long run, breeding stock is reduced and take years to rebuild. A drought in Australia or a high demand for beef in Japan can effect the price of beef in the USA. And Certified Angus Beef is the mark of quality wherever you find beef!

Buehler’s is so fortunate to have Certified Angus Beef’s corporate office just up the road. The organization oversees selection of beef for the program – with high standards that guarantee shoppers who purchase CAB beef that they will be getting high quality meat!

angusfarmvisit5

Thank you to Rod & Laurie for the opportunity for Buehler’s meat department mangers to visit Chippewa Valley Angus farm and learn first hand about the program.

Buehler’s Fresh Foods is home to the Medina Liquor Agency

The Buehler’s Medina River Styx location at 3626 Medina Road, Medina, Ohio, officially opened the Medina Liquor Agency, inside of the supermarket, on Monday, November 7, 2016. This completes the transfer and relocation agreement with the Wine Reserve to purchase the Medina Liquor Agency.

Dan Shanahan, President, and COO of Buehler’s Fresh Foods stated, “With the highly successful opening of our Ashland, Wooster, Coshocton and New Philadelphia State Liquor Agencies, this move continues the establishment of Ohio Liquor Agencies inside Buehler’s supermarket locations.”

Ron James, Buehler’s Director of Beer, Wine and Liquor added, “We are proud to offer our customers the convenience of one-stop shopping, and have strived to respect customers’ considerations by keeping this a “store within a store.”

Buehler’s Medina River Styx has expanded beer and wine offerings, with over 1,000 beers and 3,500 wines available daily, as well as a broad selection of premium spirits. There is a 10% discount on wine case purchases, and liquor agency customers may now use their credit or debit cards. Buehler’s Medina Liquor Agency hours will be Monday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and closed on Sundays. Knowledgeable employees are on-hand to assist customers with their purchase.
